Anita Saarkessian

Anita Sarkeesian was born in Canada but grew up in the US. She's been a media critic since 1995. She is the founder of Feminist Frequency a website that includes videos and comments on depictions of women's roles in popular culture. Anita Sarkeesian is an award-winning Canadian-American feminist media critic and blogger. Feminist Frequency is a non-for profit website that focuses on female representations in popular stories of culture - was created and is directed by Sarkeesian. Committed to destroying the stereotypes of women that exist in pop culture, she has also been working to address issues relating to gender-specific harassment of women as well as other classes of people on the internet. Sarkeesian also holds a York University master's in social philosophy, political and philosophical thinking. Apart from being an acclaimed public speaker she has made speeches at the TEDxWomen XOXO XOXO Conference and United Nations Broadband Working Group. She has been interested in the gender issue and feminist movements since a early time. When she graduated in 2009, continuing to study at the university level, she created her Feminist Frequency website. She had a plan to start a web-based series that would examine gender-based representations in video games. However, she found herself the target of a harassment online campaign. The woman was not stopped by the assault, actually, it just reinforced her drive to become a media critic and feminist. Sarkeesian has been awarded many awards for her contributions to the cause of feminism. Anita Sarkeesian is an award nominated media critic as well as the creator of Feminist Frequency an educational non-profit which studies the portrayals of women within pop media and the narratives that surround them.
