Ormond was born in Epsom (Surrey) as the daughter Josephine who works as an engineer and John Ormond. Ormond is the second child of five children born to her parents. In the beginning, she was a student at Guildford High School and then Cranleigh School. There, her lead performances from her first year in Guys and Dolls and My Fair Lady were noticed. After a single year of art college, she moved to Webber-Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art. Her graduation was in 1988. Ormond first made an appearance on British television in the 1989 drama Traffik which focused on the illegal heroin trade from the far East into the streets of Europe. Ormond was the heroin-addicted daughter of the character and was also a Home Office minister working to combat the importation of heroin. This was her first film role and received glowing reviews.
